Community Impact Board Approves Funding For Water System Improvements

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - March 9, 2010 - (RealEstateRama) — The Utah Permanent Community Impact Board (CIB) approved a request for special consideration for funding from the Ballard Water Improvement District during a project review meeting held on March 4. The water improvement district asked for a $338,504 grant to install a new waterline that will increase water pressure to meet required fire flow regulations. 

The $338,504 grant was awarded when the Community Impact Board suspended the rules of the monthly meeting to hear district representatives explain the problem and immediately vote to fund the project.

The grant will enable the Ballard Water Improvement District to install 8,300 linear feet of new 10” waterline along 4500 East Street between 4700 North and 3000 North, increasing line pressure to meet the required fire flow regulations. If left uncorrected, water improvement district officials said they expected water pressure levels to decrease to unacceptable levels of less than 20 psi. The new waterline will enable the district to maintain its existing acceptable water pressures.

“Maintaining an adequate water supply is essential for public health and is the most important reason to fund this project now,” said Community Impact Board member and Uintah County Commissioner Michael McKee. “We know that waterlines leak and contaminated groundwater may, if insufficient pressure exists, flow into a pipe, creating a hazardous situation.”

The Community Impact Board awards grants and low-interest loans to cities, towns and counties impacted by mining and the extraction of oil and gas on federal land. Projects funded by the CIB benefit rural Utah by creating safer, more livable communities. The program is managed by the Division of Housing and Community Development under the Utah Department of Community and Culture.
