Reckitt Benckiser Begins Construction Of New Logistics Center In Salt Lake City
Parsippany, NJ – May 5, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Reckitt Benckiser held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Logistics and Custom Manufacturing Center on May 5, 2009 in Tooele, Utah. Construction will take place over the course of 2009, with the site expected to begin operation in the first quarter of 2010.
The event was attended by representatives of the Governor’s Office for Economic Development, the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, and Tooele County.
“We are excited to become a part of the Tooele County community,” said Brad Newman, Director of North America Supply Services for Reckitt Benckiser. “An extensive study of our supply chain determined that distribution from the Salt Lake City area will improve our financial results and also enhance service for the growing concentration of customers in the Pacific Northwest and in Western Canada.”
“The $35 million capital investment by Reckitt Benckiser and the construction of this 600,000 sq. foot facility in Utah is a great statement of confidence in the State of Utah and its people. We have all used products like Lysol, Woolite, Electrasol and French’s Mustard; now Utah workers will be an important part of this great company. The fact that Utah continues to attract strong, profitable and growing companies will help our job base and our economic viability for decades to come,” said Jason Perry, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.
“We congratulate Reckitt Benckiser on its new expansion in Tooele County,” says Jeff Edwards, president and CEO of Economic Development Corporation of Utah. “As our communities, state and businesses work together on these important opportunities, we are especially pleased that Reckitt Benckiser with its long history and prominent brands has chosen to come to our state to create these quality jobs and capital investment.”
The new Logistics Center, the first building in Miller Motorsports Business Park, is being developed through a collaborative effort between USAA and Greenfield Builders. The building will be owned by USAA Real Estate Company and will be leased to Reckitt Benckiser on a long term basis. The terms of the lease agreement will remain confidential. RB’s real estate activities were represented by Summit Realty Group, a member of the Cushman & Wakefield Alliance and its local Utah affiliate, Commerce CRG.
The project will include a 574,106 square foot building that will consist of 16,000 square feet of office and 510,000 square feet of warehouse and custom packaging operations. The design allows for an additional 220,000 square feet of future expansion. Reckitt Benckiser expects to ultimately create over 100 jobs at the site.
The new facility will replace an existing Logistics Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The Phoenix Logistics Center, which is run by a third-party, will close when the transition of customers currently serviced from that location is completed.
The Salt Lake City Logistics Center will also eventually assume responsibility for customers in Western Canada that are currently serviced from Reckitt Benckiser’s Logistics Center in Milton, Canada, location. This transition will take place after the Salt Lake City site has successfully assimilated the business from the Phoenix location. The Milton Logistics Center will remain in operation servicing the Eastern Canadian business.
